Chapter Nine

Luckily, the big move I’d scheduled went off without a hitch and ended with the client being so impressed with how swiftly and professionally the job had been completed, she added a bonus for my workers and told me she was going to recommend my business to all her friends.

That kind of publicity can’t be bought and paid for.

My cheek hurt more than I’d let on to Charlie, but once I got home and showered, I put an ice pack across it and replaced it a few times during the day.

Of course Ella and Dan had been beside themselves, guffawing like seven year-olds who’d been told a fart joke, when I explained the reason I needed it.

“Only you, babe,” Dan said, after kissing my head.

“Well, we all know that’s the truth,” I mumbled.

Once Dan went back to his office to meet a client, Ella closed the door behind him and sauntered back to my desk, arms folded across her chest, a knowing smile on her face.

“So. Things have...progressed, with the good professor?”

“And by progressed, you’re asking if we have sex, right?”

She lifted one shoulder and grinned at me. “I already know the answer, but I’ll listen if you want to give me details. And make them juicy, graphic ones, please.”

“Don’t you have enough to keep you occupied with your own sex life with Prince Charming? Why do you need to hear about mine?”

“So that’s a confirmation, then? You slept with him?”

I shook my head then dropped my chin to my chest. “I really hate you sometimes.”

“Yeah, but you love me more, so spill, Penelope. How was it?”

Before I could rein the word in, I said, “Amazing.”

Ella’s smile lit up the room like a Broadway marquee at night.

“That’s the first time you’ve ever used that word to describe sex.”

I groaned and covered my cheek with the ice pack again. “I know. Believe me, I know.”

“Why does it sound like you’re upset about it? I think you’d be thrilled.”

“I am. It’s just, well, I told him who I was.”

“Oh. Wow. That’s a surprise. Wait. When? Before or after you two...” she wiggled her fingers in the air.

“Before.”

My office grew silent. I pulled my chin from my chest to find her with the expression that means she’s considering something. Head tilted to one side, perfectly plucked eyebrows folding inward, and one corner of her lip tucked between her bottom and top teeth.

She pointed her index finger at me. “Stop it, Nell.”

“Stop what? You’re the one giving me a look.”

“I know you, sweetie,” said, swiping her hand again. “Better than anyone on earth aside from your mom.”

I shrugged and readjusted the ice pack.

“You’re wondering if he only slept with you because after finding out who you are he wanted to have sex with someone who’s fringe-famous.”

I rolled my eyes and hissed because the movement tugged on my sore cheek.

“Or, he wants to use your notoriety and your connection to your father to his own end, like with a tabloid or something equally as horrible.
